Gorard 2020: the Wolfram program's formal quantum paper calls its derivation a conjecture and states the Born rule without deriving it
- what the source states
- The body frames the quantum claim as unproven: "our central conjecture in this paper is that discrete forms of quantum mechanics" (and quantum field theory) can be derived from the principle of multiway invariance (p. 29). Branch states are taken as a basis: "By assumption, these eigenstates form an orthonormal basis for the Hilbert space" (p. 16). Outcome probabilities are then stated: the a priori probability of collapse to an eigenstate is "given by the multiway Born rule for evolution path weights" (p. 17). Bell-type correlations come from explicit nonlocality: "one is able to prove violation of the CHSH inequality in much the same way as one does for other standard deterministic and nonlocal interpretations of quantum mechanics" (p. 52).
- what we infer
- "By assumption" governs the orthonormal basis, not the probability rule. The probability rule is a separate step: on p. 17 the Born rule is stated for path weights, with no derivation given there, and a search of the paper's full text finds no other passage that names the Born rule or derives its squared form. The same search finds no mention or derivation of the Tsirelson bound: the Bell passages (pp. 51–52) obtain CHSH violation the way any explicitly nonlocal deterministic model obtains it, which says nothing about the cap of 2√2. Read against the calibration this case uses (ZW-C502), the paper therefore does not reach the distinctively quantum benchmarks, and its author labels the derivation of quantum mechanics a conjecture. None of it starts from the two observer features (computational boundedness, belief in persistence) that Wolfram's 2023 essay names as sufficient: the observer enters here as a chosen foliation of the multiway graph.
- limitations
- The paper was not read in full or audited. Its full text (62 pages) was retrieved and searched for the Born rule, Bell, CHSH, Tsirelson, conjecture and assumption, and the passages found were read (on 2026-10-21, and again on 2026-10-22). The statements that no derivation of the Born rule or the Tsirelson bound appears rest on that search. A derivation in other words, not caught by those terms, cannot be excluded without a full reading.
- The convergence proof itself was not checked; that would take a mathematician's audit (ZW-R007).
- Published in a journal founded by Stephen Wolfram, by an author then at Wolfram Research. This case's search found no outside group that has rederived or refuted the results.
- A 2020 paper. Later formal work in the program (for example on axiomatic quantum field theory in multiway causal structure, 2023) was noted in the search but not read.
