Justin Martyr: bread and wine-with-water, framed against the mysteries
- what the source states
- Justin (c. 155) describes the rite in detail: "bread and a cup of wine mixed with water" brought to the president, thanksgiving offered, and distribution by deacons; the food is received "not as common bread and common drink" but christologically, per the apostles' memoirs ("This is My body... This is My blood"); and the parallel rite "in the mysteries of Mithras" is presented as something "wicked devils have imitated."
- what we infer
- The earliest detailed outsider-facing liturgical description shows ordinary elements and a polemical stance toward mystery-cult parallels — the direction of borrowing as the second century itself framed it runs opposite to the inheritance thesis. Normative insider testimony, with the limits that implies.
