The May 2026 correction: extraterrestrial-source conclusion withdrawn
- what the source states
- The formal correction replaces the original's description of the Greenland anomaly as "the most compelling evidence to date for a catastrophic extraterrestrial event" with source-neutral language, corrects the Petaev values (~21-year span, ~30 ppt average, ~80 ppt peak), adds the Boslough comment and Petaev reply as references, and rewrites the conclusion: the North American enrichments are "compatible with interpretations involving a continentally distributed influx of Pt-rich material" but "do not independently resolve the ultimate source of the Greenland anomaly or the specific mechanism responsible."
- what we infer
- An official, author-signed example of the distinction this whole case turns on: the observation stands; the attribution is withdrawn. Every secondary summary that still cites Moore et al. 2017 as platinum proof of an impact is now citing language the authors themselves no longer stand behind.
- limitations
- A correction is not a retraction: the measurements themselves are unchallenged by this action.
