reliability notes
  • Independent reanalysis (UBC): confirms the variance variations exist, shows properly simulated Gaussian CMB data contain the same variations; source of the 're-discovered that the CMB contains structure' verdict.

Moss, Scott & Zibin 2011: the variations are entirely expected in a structured sky

what the source states
"We can indeed confirm that such variations do exist in the temperature variance for annuli around points in the data. However, we find that this variation is entirely expected in a sky which contains the usual CMB anisotropies. In other words, properly simulated Gaussian CMB data contain just the sorts of variations claimed. Gurzadyan & Penrose have not found evidence for pre-Big Bang phenomena, but have simply re-discovered that the CMB contains structure."
what we infer
Undermines the anomaly claim (CCC-C002) and supplies the rival thesis's slogan (CCC-C010). The direction here is logged against CCC-C002; the same record's confirmation of the features' existence is carried by CCC-E002's parallel finding rather than double-counted.
limitations
  • Same ensemble-choice dependence as all critical reanalyses (CCC-C003).
  • The paper also notes the low-variance circles are dominated by low-multipole structure, an explanatory detail not separately imported.
