Zhitnitsky 2026: a dark-matter interpretation, offered without engaging the artifact question
- what the source states
- A hep-ph preprint proposes that the POSS-I transients are a manifestation of dark matter in the form of axion quark nuggets, draws a parallel to ball lightning, relates the phenomenon to UAP reports, and states that it suggests several tests that would substantiate or refute the proposal.
- what we infer
- Context only, and deliberately so. The paper offers no observation, measurement or reanalysis; it takes the transients' reality as its premise, which is precisely the unresolved crux (TRN-C020), and so inherits the question rather than bearing on it. What it does record is that the anomaly has begun attracting explanation attempts from outside the astronomy and plate-forensics communities. The specific tests it says it proposes are in the body text and are not recorded here, because they were not read; if they turn out to be discriminating they would belong in the research agenda rather than as evidence.
- limitations
- Not peer reviewed; a theoretical interpretation with no new data.
- Applies the author's own long-running dark-matter programme, which he has applied to several unrelated anomalies; a fit to one more is weak evidence for the model or for any claim here.
- Does not engage the plate-defect literature at all, so it cannot count for or against the artifact account.
- Abstract read only; the paper's proposed tests are not recorded because they were not examined.
