Elusive by Law

Does the Model of Pragmatic Information correctly predict that mind–matter correlations must decline whenever an experiment tries to pin them down — or is the decline just what noise does?

Weakly supportedMedium research priorityAI assessment · ratified by 5 of 5 independent models

why this research priority

The forward-looking tests are modest in cost — an equal-power true-vs-pseudo-RNG comparison and binding fine-structure predictions (MPI-R001, MPI-R003) — but the paradigm's own proponents concede it does not replicate on demand, capping expected yield.

What is claimed

Psi phenomena are real but are non-local, meaning-dependent correlations between an observer and a physical system — not signals or forces.

Because such correlations can never be used to transmit information (the "no-transmission" axiom), any experiment that could turn them into a reliable signal will find them declining, changing sign, or displacing to unmonitored variables. Correlation-matrix experiments, which spread the effect across many variable pairs instead of one outcome channel, are claimed to reveal these correlations as a surplus of significant matrix cells relative to control runs.

Where the disagreement lives

Not over whether decline happens — everyone agrees psi effects have never replicated stably. The crux is why. MPI says decline is the lawful signature of a real but unexploitable correlation, and points to matrix experiments where the effect appeared, moved, and faded roughly as the model expects.

The conventional account says the initial effects were never real: intercorrelated variables inflated the count of significant cells, flexible analysis and publication bias supplied the early positives, and regression to the mean supplied the decline. Both stories fit a declining effect; they part company over the initial positives and over the fine structure of where effects reappear.

What would settle it

Adversarial, preregistered correlation-matrix replications with blind-analysis protocols, dependence-aware statistics agreed by both sides in advance, and — critically — prespecified quantitative predictions for the decline and displacement structure itself, endorsed by MPI's proponents as binding.

Repeated failure of those fine-structure predictions in adequately powered blind tests would strip MPI of its distinctive content; their repeated success under conditions that exclude analytic flexibility would be extraordinary. A stable, exploitable psi signal anywhere would refute the model outright — by its own axiom.

The verdict holds at weakly_supported, and for the same structural reason as the previous run: the ladder is sound at the bottom and at the theory layer, and breaks at attribution. On the observation rung, the founding reports (MPI-E001) are real reports but not audited results — the word 'significantly' in MPI-C001 imports a significance count computed over intercorrelated matrix cells, a defect first sharpened inside the program itself (MPI-E007), with the raw data still unpublished.

▸ the full reasoning

Against that stand the strictest designs in the corpus: two OSF-preregistered consensus replications run by the proponents' own team and reported null (MPI-E003), Grote's 200-participant frozen-software blind analysis (MPI-E004), and the preplanned nulls of MPI-E006. The nulls, not the positives, are what the case now rests on. On the mechanism rung, MPI-C005 and MPI-C006 are documentary and secure: the decline, sign-change and displacement corollaries are in print in 2007 (MPI-E009), and the matrix design is explicitly nominated by the theorists as the model's own best test (MPI-E011). This matters both ways — it protects the model from the retrofitting charge, and it binds it to a paradigm its own team has now declared non-replicable. The attribution rung is where the argument fails. MPI-C007's surviving residue is thin and each part is qualified: MPI-E002 was described as 'significant but fragile' by its own authors a year later; MPI-E007's three-of-five share equipment, personnel and analytic choices and so are not three independent confirmations; MPI-E008 is an unreviewed preprint whose RNG-type split is confounded by a 94%-versus-67% power asymmetry. Meanwhile every mundane mechanism in MPI-C008 is documented operating in or adjacent to this literature — post-hoc rescue live in MPI-E006, dependence inflation in MPI-E007, publication-bias dominance in the parent micro-PK record (MPI-E015), a manufactured false positive from a coding error (MPI-E017) — while MPI-E016 warns that in the best-studied neighboring database QRPs did not cover the whole distance. Crucially, the decline pattern itself (MPI-C003, MPI-E014) is evidentially inert between the rivals: regression to the mean on selected noise predicts the same curve, so MPI earns integrity credit for predicting it in advance but no discriminating credit. The highest-value next steps are unchanged: a dependence-aware peer-reviewed reanalysis of the founding datasets, and a prespecified test of the strength–reproducibility reciprocity corollary, which remains the model's only distinctive, untested fine structure.

Kimi K3 (Moonshot, via Venice)Weakly supportedconcursThe ladder separates cleanly, and this case is decided on its top rung.

The ladder separates cleanly, and this case is decided on its top rung. The observation rung is solid: no party in the corpus disputes that the matrix program produced early surpluses, that its strictest replications are null, or that reported effects faded and shifted across four decades (MPI-C001 through MPI-C003). The mechanism rung is also real: Generalized Quantum Theory exists as a published formalism in a serious venue, and the no-transmission axiom's decline/displacement entailment is verbatim in print from 2007 — years before the preregistered failures it now explains (MPI-C004 through MPI-C006). What this buys MPI is integrity, not evidence: the predictions were demonstrably not retrofitted to the 2017–2021 record. But the attribution rung is where the featured thesis fails to carry its weight, for three structural reasons. First, the decline prediction is shared with the null hypothesis: regression to the mean acting on selected noise predicts exactly the same trajectory, so the replication record — the program's centerpiece — is evidentially inert between the rivals. Second, the foundation is compromised from inside: the founding surpluses were counted against independence assumptions the data violate, and that critique comes from the program's own doctoral work, not from hostile skeptics (MPI-C009). Third, every mundane mechanism the conventional account requires is documented operating inside this very corpus — a coding error manufacturing a celebrated effect, a post-hoc contrast conjuring significance where three preplanned analyses were null, publication-bias sensitivity in the parent literature (MPI-C008). Steelmanning MPI: it nominated its own positive test; its proponents publish their failures under admirably candid titles; one preregistered, adequately powered replication (Walach 2020) did report a surplus; and its genuinely discriminating fine structure — strength–reproducibility reciprocity, displacement into related observables — has never been prespecified and tested, so the model's distinctive content is unexercised rather than refuted. Steelmanning the null: the best-designed experiment in the corpus found exactly nothing; the proponents' own frozen consensus protocol failed twice; and "not a replicable paradigm" is the proponents' own conclusion about their chosen benchmark. The verdict is weakly_supported rather than contradicted because MPI's insulation makes contradiction structurally elusive and residual positives (Flores's permutation-surviving results, the unreviewed RNG split) forbid a clean-null verdict — but the burden has shifted decisively onto the fine-structure tests this model has never run.

The core dispute in "Elusive by Law?" is whether the ubiquitous decline effect observed in correlation-matrix parapsychology experiments is the lawful signature of generalized quantum entanglement or the entirely mundane product of statistical artifact and regression to the mean. The Model of Pragmatic Information (MPI) offers an intriguing, formally coherent framework (Generalized Quantum Theory) predicting that psychophysical correlations exist but inherently resist being harnessed as reliable signals (the no-transmission axiom). Steelmanning the MPI position requires acknowledging that its proponents successfully published these theoretical predictions before the recent wave of strict replication failures. Furthermore, the correlation-matrix paradigm initially produced statistical surpluses that appeared to support the model's expectations of "jumping" and transient effects, with even some recent, adequately powered studies showing residual positive anomalies under less constrained conditions. However, the evidentiary ledger tilts heavily toward the conventional explanation. The founding positive results are severely undermined by the statistical dependence critique; when the intercorrelation of psychological variables is properly modeled, the apparent anomalies substantially diminish. More decisively, as methodological rigor has escalated to include full blind-analysis and preregistered consensus protocols, the purported effects have completely evaporated. Steelmanning the conventional account means recognizing that it does not merely offer generalized skepticism, but relies on specific, documented failure modes explicitly caught operating within this very literature: post-hoc analytic flexibility conjuring significance out of null data, publication bias broadly impacting random-event-generator studies, and software coding errors previously mistaken for anomalous phenomena. Ultimately, while MPI is not entirely unfalsifiable—its proponents concede the paradigm's lack of replicability, and its fine-structure predictions regarding displacement remain technically testable—its current deployment absorbs failure far too easily. Because regression to the mean and multiple testing on noisy data naturally produce the exact same trajectory of initial surplus followed by scattering and decline, the evidence currently lacks the diagnosticity to justify invoking a novel scientific paradigm. The conventional statistical explanation comfortably accounts for the entire corpus without requiring revisions to the known laws of physics, leaving the MPI framework weakly supported as an empirical description of reality.

GPT-5.1 (OpenAI)MixedconcursOn the observation rung, the record is clear.

On the observation rung, the record is clear. Early correlation-matrix and related micro-PK studies reported excess correlations between psychological and random-physical variables (MPI-C001), but when the paradigm was re-run under stricter methodological control — preregistered protocols and, at the apex, Hartmut Grote’s full blind analysis — the effect mostly vanished (MPI-C002). Across groups, designs, and time, nominal effects weakened, failed to reappear, or shifted to different variables or analyses (MPI-C003). This decline-and-displacement pattern is uncontroversial as a description; it is also documented more widely across parapsychology (MPI-E014). On the mechanism rung, MPI is internally coherent about what it claims. Generalized Quantum Theory (MPI-C004) and the no-transmission (NT) axiom (MPI-C005) together yield, in print and well before the latest experiments, the qualitative prediction that genuine psychophysical correlations cannot form a stable, exploitable signal and must decline, reverse, or “evade” when experiments tighten. The correlation-matrix design is explicitly constructed as the model’s own test-bed: by distributing potential effects over many correlations, it is meant to allow such unexploitable correlations to appear as a surplus of significant cells while still forbidding any clear signalling channel (MPI-C006). As statements about what MPI says and how the paradigm was intended, these claims are well-supported by the theorists’ own publications. The crux lies on the attribution and falsifiability rungs. The featured hypothesis (MPI-C007) is that the messy record — early positives, decline, and displacement — is best explained by real non-local psychophysical correlations of the MPI kind. The steelman rival (MPI-C008) holds that regression to the mean, analytic flexibility, publication bias, and — critically — statistical dependence among matrix cells are jointly sufficient to explain the same pattern from null data. Here the evidence is asymmetric. On the conventional side, every mechanism invoked is independently documented in or near this corpus (MPI-E015–E017). Most importantly, Flores’s Monte Carlo and permutation work shows that the psychological variables in matrix studies are strongly intercorrelated and that dependence-aware simulations shrink the founding excess-correlation results (MPI-C009, MPI-E007). Grote’s 2017 study demonstrates how a null set of preplanned analyses can coexist with a seemingly impressive post-hoc positive (MPI-E006). A celebrated micro-PK effect in a neighboring line collapses under a discovered coding error (MPI-E017). And the largest blind-analysis test in the matrix paradigm is cleanly null (MPI-E004). These strands jointly make it provisionally credible that ordinary statistical and methodological artifacts can explain the corpus without anomalous correlations, even though no one has yet constructed a single quantitative simulation that reproduces the exact pattern across all studies. On the MPI-advocating side, there are peer-reviewed positives that resist being dismissed as trivial. Walach et al. 2020’s two-lab, preregistration-era study reported a significant matrix surplus evaluated against 10,000 simulations (MPI-E002), and Flores’s thesis found three of five in-house replications significant under permutation tests designed to respect dependence (MPI-E007). The 2023 online game replication reports a striking true-RNG/pseudo-RNG split (MPI-E008), which qualitatively points the “right” way for quantum-flavored models, though it is unreviewed and unevenly powered. These positives stop the conventional account short of “established”: they keep open a residual anomaly, especially because some were produced by methodologically sophisticated insiders aware of the statistical pitfalls. However, the strongest-designed and most insulated tests — Grote’s 200-participant blind analysis and the proponents’ own consensus-protocol replications — are null (MPI-E003, MPI-E004), and the founding series that originally motivated MPI has been weakened by the dependence critique. Given that MPI deliberately predicts decline under replication (MPI-C005), these failures neither obviously confirm nor refute it purely on pattern; but when weighed against priors and the documented artifact mechanisms, they substantially undercut MPI-C007. On this dossier alone, genuine non-local correlations remain at best weakly-supported. The falsifiability concern (MPI-C010) is real but not absolute. The proponents’ own language after failed replications — that failure is “likely part of the systematic nature of such effects” — illustrates a practice of reading both success and failure as consistent with MPI, which in practice insulates it from disconfirmation at the level of qualitative patterns. At the same time, the model is not logically unfalsifiable: it forbids any stable, exploitable psi signal and makes distinctive fine-structure predictions (e.g., stronger initial effects should decline faster; displacement should land in related observables). Those quantitative predictions have simply not been bound in advance and tested under adversarial blind conditions. Thus MPI-C010 is best rated mixed: the theory as used has been insulated, but need not be. Integrating these lines, the overall case assessment is mixed. The decline-and-displacement pattern that motivated MPI is real; the model’s internal logic and its self-nominated matrix test are clearly described; and there remain some anomalous-looking results. Yet the weight of the strongest evidence favors the conventional null-plus-artifacts account, and MPI’s distinctive content has not been sharply tested. On the present evidence, MPI remains an intriguing but weakly corroborated explanatory framework for a pattern that is, so far, more parsimoniously explained by noise, bias, and dependence, with a small residue not yet decisively allocated either way. Further progress depends on the proposed adversarial, dependence-aware, blind tests that pin down the theory’s fine-structure predictions.

The featured hypothesis is not that decline occurs — that is common ground — but that decline is the lawful signature of real, unexploitable psychophysical entanglement of the kind MPI describes. Assessed as an attribution about nature rather than as a description of a published theory, that hypothesis is only weakly supported by the records in this file. The observational rungs are solid and do not settle the case. Lucadou's group did report experimental-over-control surpluses from 1986 to 2006, and the later literature describes a genuine instability: Walach's 2020 two-lab surplus was called "significant but fragile" by its own authors a year later; two consensus-protocol replications were null; Grote's 2015 signal gave way to preplanned nulls in 2017 and a fully blind null in 2021. Kennedy's field-wide review confirms that this trajectory is the usual parapsychological pattern, not a matrix-specific curiosity. None of that distinguishes a shy law from selected noise. Steelman for MPI. The no-transmission axiom and its decline, sign-reversal, and displacement corollaries were in print in 2007, before the strict failures. The correlation-matrix design was the model's self-nominated positive test, not a post-hoc alibi, and for a time it produced the predicted surplus — including a large, simulation-evaluated two-lab report in an APA journal. Flores still found three of five thesis replications significant under permutation tests meant to respect dependence, and her 2023 online split (true RNG significant, pseudo-RNG not) points the direction a quantum-flavored account wants. Generalized Quantum Theory is a real published formalism, not a metaphor. The model takes a genuine risk at the aggregate level: any stable, exploitable psi channel anywhere would refute it. Read that way, the empty box Grote opened on stage is what the theory said a well-built box would contain. Steelman for the conventional account. Counting significant cells against independence, when the psychological variables are highly intercorrelated, inflates the founding statistic; Flores's own Monte Carlo work, reported from inside the program, says the original results diminish once that dependence is respected. Grote 2017 is a live demonstration that a post-hoc contrast can extract p = 0.012 from data whose three preplanned analyses were null. Maier and Dechamps traced a celebrated neighboring micro-PK effect to a coding error. Bösch's 380-study REG meta-analysis judged publication bias the most encompassing explanation of the parent literature. The methodologically strongest test in the corpus — two hundred participants, analysis software locked before unblinding — fell well inside the chance distribution. Regression to the mean plus multiplicity produces decline and "displacement" from null data without remainder. On this reading MPI is a quantum vocabulary for the null hypothesis. The records do not make the conventional account airtight. No one has shown quantitatively that QRPs and dependence reproduce this specific published matrix record; Bierman's neighboring ganzfeld simulation covered about sixty percent, not all, of that effect; and a few structured positives survived analyses that were not naive. Those residues keep C007 from being contradicted. They do not carry it. The model's distinctive fine structure — faster decline after stronger initial effects, reappearance in related rather than random observables — has never been pinned down in advance and tested. Until it is, successes confirm entanglement and failures confirm elusiveness, and the attribution question is decided by priors about how often selected noise looks like a law. The evidence in this file, weighed without those priors doing extra work, leaves the shy-correlation thesis standing on a thinning ledge: early reports of contested statistical validity, a handful of later positives that did not survive the next tightening, and a prediction that the null hypothesis also makes.

The case has an unusual structure: its observational spine (MPI-C002, MPI-C003) is well documented and essentially uncontested, yet almost non-diagnostic, because the featured hypothesis and its rival predict the same trajectory. Everything therefore rests on two hinges — whether the founding positives were ever real (MPI-C001 against MPI-C009), and whether MPI's distinctive content beyond the shared decline prediction has ever been put at risk (MPI-C005, MPI-C010). On the first hinge, the evidence records are thin in a way that matters: MPI-E001 rests on second-hand characterizations of proceedings and German-language reports whose raw data have never been released, while the one dependence-aware reanalysis in the corpus (MPI-E007, Flores) comes from inside the program and reports that the original significances shrink. On the second hinge, the 2007 paper does state decline, sign reversal, displacement into related observables, and strength–reproducibility reciprocity in print, before the failures — a genuine priority claim (MPI-E009). But not one of those corollaries has ever been operationalized as a prespecified metric, so the model's only tested prediction is the one it shares with the null hypothesis. Steelmanning MPI: its self-nominated benchmark did produce a peer-reviewed, two-lab, 10,000-simulation positive (MPI-E002); Flores obtained three of five positives under permutation analyses built to respect dependence; the 2023 true-RNG/pseudo-RNG split points the theoretically expected way; and proponents publish their own failures and preregistered protocols, which is not the behavior of a closed system. Steelmanning the rival: every mechanism it needs is caught operating in this literature — a coding error manufacturing a micro-PK effect, a post-hoc rescue of a null study, publication-bias sensitivity in the parent REG meta-analysis, and documented intercorrelation inflating cell counts — and the single strictest test, Grote's 200-participant blind analysis, returned exactly what the rival predicts. I do not reach "contradicted" because the discriminating experiments (dependence-aware reanalysis of the founding data; equal-power source comparison; binding fine-structure predictions) have never been run, and a fragile residue of positives survives non-blind conservative analysis. I do not reach "mixed" because the asymmetry is real: the positives cluster where controls are weakest, and the strongest designs are uniformly null. My prior against unmediated psychophysical correlation contributes here, and I flag it: without that prior, the corpus would read closer to unresolved.

In July 2019, at a conference in Paris, a gravitational-wave physicist opened a box in public. Hartmut Grote builds instruments for a living — the kind that measure distortions in spacetime smaller than a proton — and for a decade he had run, on the side, careful experiments on whether human intention can influence a random physical process. This one was armored against every known way of fooling yourself: two hundred participants, and a "blind analysis" protocol in which the entire evaluation software was written, tested, and locked before anyone looked at the data. The unblinding — the moment the analysis runs and the answer appears — happened live, on stage. The main result was null, falling well within what chance predictsC002.

▸ claims behind this paragraph (1)

For most theories about anomalous mind–matter effects, that is where the story ends. For the theory Grote was testing, it is where the story gets strange. The Model of Pragmatic Information — MPI, developed by the German physicist and parapsychology researcher Walter von Lucadou since the 1980s — does not merely tolerate failed replications. It predicts them, in print, as a consequence of its central axiomC005. On MPI's account, the box Grote opened was always going to be empty, or nearly so, because he had built it so well.

▸ claims behind this paragraph (1)

A theory that predicts its own replication failures sounds like a joke about unfalsifiability, and one of this case's jobs is to take that worry with full seriousness. But MPI is more interesting than the joke version. It made its predictions before the failures happened. It proposed its own experiment, with a positive signature that was supposed to show up — and for a while, in its inventors' hands, it did. And the question it was built to answer is real: after a century of laboratory parapsychology, effects keep appearing in initial studies and dissolving in stricter ones, a pattern documented by insiders as much as critics. Something produces that pattern. The candidates are a law of nature or the ordinary statistics of nothing, and the two are harder to tell apart than they should be.

The theory, without the mathematics

MPI starts by refusing the assumption that psi effects, if real, are signals — something sent from a mind to a machine, however weakly. Instead it treats them as correlations: coordinated behavior between a person and a physical system that belong, temporarily, to one closed system of meaning, the way two entangled particles belong to one quantum state. In quantum mechanics, entangled particles show correlations that no signal explains — and, famously, those correlations cannot be used to transmit a message. A generalization of this structure — keeping complementarity and entanglement, dropping the physical constants — was formalized as "weak" or Generalized Quantum Theory in 2002C004, and MPI sits inside it as the special case where the entangled parts are a person and an apparatus, bound by what the theory calls pragmatic information: information that matters to the system receiving it.

▸ claims behind this paragraph (1)

From this one commitment everything distinctive follows. If the correlations cannot carry a message, then no experiment can be allowed to turn them into one. A perfectly replicable psi experiment would be a telegraph — press here, read the answer there — and the model's "no-transmission" axiom forbids telegraphs. So when a protocol becomes reliable enough to exploit, the correlation must fade, reverse sign, or move somewhere elseC005: to a different variable, a different part of the system, a different analysis. Parapsychologists had names for these embarrassments long before MPI — the decline effect, the displacement effect, catalogued across the field's own literature as its most reliable featureC003. MPI's wager was to promote the embarrassments to theorems.

▸ claims behind this paragraph (2)

The experiment the theory built for itself

A theory that only explained failure would explain too much. Lucadou understood this, and in the 1980s designed an experiment his model says should work — the correlation-matrix experiment, and the reason this case is testable at all.

A participant sits before a display driven by a physical random event generator and presses keys, trying to "influence" it.

Context only — this photograph is not of any MPI experiment and is evidence for nothing in this case. SBM-20 Geiger–Müller tubes, a common hardware entropy source of the kind used in true-random event generators. The MPI literature's physical channel is such a generator; a later online replication reported a surplus with a true-random source and a null with a deterministic pseudo-random one. The tubes illustrate the hardware, not a result.

And in its inventors' hands, it worked. Lucadou's experiments from 1986 through 2006 reported roughly twice as many significant correlations in experimental sessions as in control runsC001. In 2020, a larger two-lab replication led by the health researcher Harald Walach — rebuilt hardware, 2,025-cell matrix, evaluation against ten thousand simulated experiments — reported a significant surplus againC007, in an American Psychological Association journal.

▸ claims behind this paragraph (2)

The record, under pressure

Then the protocols tightened, and the pattern every parapsychologist knows reasserted itself.

Walach's team convened an international consortium, froze a consensus protocol, deposited it publicly before data collection, and ran two further replications with the same equipment. Both were null. To their credit, they published the failures under a title of rare candor — "Nailing Jelly: The Replication Problem Seems to Be Unsurmountable" — and conceded that the matrix experiment "in and of itself is not a replicable paradigm"C002. In the same paper they described their own 2020 success as "significant but fragile," its significance breaking down under improved methods of analysis.

▸ claims behind this paragraph (1)

Grote's independent series traced the same arc in miniature: a significant result in 2015, then in 2017 a study where all three analyses he had defined in advance came out null — while a variant he constructed after seeing the data came out significantC008, and finally the 2019 blind analysis, published in 2021: null. At Edinburgh's Koestler Parapsychology Unit, Ana Flores ran five replications for her doctoral thesis, some with Lucadou's own equipment, and got a genuinely mixed answer: three of five significant under analyses designed to be more conservative than the originals. Her later online version, with 726 participants, split down the middle in a theoretically suggestive way — significant with a true random source, null with a deterministic pseudo-random one — though that result remains an unreviewed preprint. And the model's one field test — a three-year, sixteen-country study of spontaneous poltergeist-type cases, testing MPI's prediction that documenting a case in detail suppresses it — collapsed to fourteen usable cases and decided nothing.

▸ claims behind this paragraph (1)

Read as a whole, the record is exactly what MPI said it would be: early surpluses, fading and scattering as protocols hardened. The trouble is that it is also exactly what nothing-at-all would look like.

The steelman: what noise does

The conventional explanation deserves to be stated at full strength, because in this case it is unusually well armed — nearly every mechanism it needs has been caught operating somewhere in this very literature.

Start with the statistics. Counting "significant cells" in a matrix only means something if the cells are independent, and they are not: the psychological variables correlate strongly with one another, so significant cells arrive in bundles, and the founding analyses counted the bundles as if each cell were separate testimony. Simulations respecting that dependence shrink the original headline resultsC009 — a critique reported not by hostile skeptics but from inside the research program itself. Add the documented failure modes: a celebrated correlational micro-PK effect in a neighboring research line turned out to be a software coding error, found and honorably published by its own authors; Grote's 2017 post-hoc rescue shows how flexible analysis conjures significance from null data; and the broader random-generator literature that the matrix program grew from was assessed by the largest meta-analysis in the field's flagship journal as most economically explained by publication bias. On this reading the whole arc — surplus, decline, displacement — is regression to the mean acting on selected noise, and MPI is a quantum-flavored description of the null hypothesisC008.

▸ claims behind this paragraph (2)

The steelman is not airtight. A simulation study by researchers sympathetic to the field found that questionable research practices at realistic frequencies explained about sixty percent of the flagship ganzfeld effect — a long way, but not all the way. Walach's 2020 replication was large, two-lab, and evaluated against ten thousand simulated experiments, and reported its surplus anyway. Flores's three-of-five survived her own conservative analyses. The mundane account predicts that stricter methods kill the effect; mostly they did, but not cleanly, not everywhere.

The crux

So the case comes down to a question that is only partly about data: is the decline-and-displacement record evidence of a real, lawfully shy correlationC007 — or is MPI so constructed that no record could count against it? When the strictest test comes back positive, the model is confirmed; when it comes back null, the model predicted that too. The proponents' own response to their failed replications — that failure "is likely part of the systematic nature of such effects" — is, depending on where you stand, a theory being consistent or a theory being unfalsifiable in practiceC010.

▸ claims behind this paragraph (2)

The honest answer is that the insulation is a habit, not a theorem. MPI does expose itself: its axiom forbids any stable, exploitable psi channel anywhere, ever — a risky universal claim that one replicable experiment would demolish. It nominated the matrix design as a positive prediction that could have failed from the start. And it asserts distinctive fine structure that no one has ever pinned down in advance: decline should be faster when the initial effect was stronger; displaced effects should reappear in related observables, not random ones. Those are testable claims. They have simply never been tested as predictions — only invoked, afterward, as explanations.

What would settle it

That is the research agenda, and it is unusually concrete for a dispute this old. Freeze the fine structure: an adversarial replication, blind-analysis by construction, with the decline and displacement predictions specified quantitatively in advance and endorsed by the model's proponents as binding. Re-run the founding analyses under dependence-aware statistics — desk work that would either restore the program's origin story or dissolve it. Run the true-random versus pseudo-random comparison at equal power, one of the few places where MPI and the null hypothesis disagree about the future rather than the past. And ask the proponents, formally and on the record, what result they would accept as a refutation.

A theory that predicts its own elusiveness has one obligation above all others: to say what it forbids. Forty years in, that remains the one experiment the Model of Pragmatic Information has never quite run.

Nailing Jelly: two preregistered consensus-protocol replications fail

what the source states
Following a consensus protocol deposited on OSF before commencement, two independent replications of the 2020 experiment were run with the same equipment: 64 participants (post-hoc power 0.88) and 40 participants (power 0.69), analyzed by a nonparametric randomization test with 10,000 iterations. "Neither of the two experiments was significant." The authors conclude "that the matrix experiment in and of itself is not a replicable paradigm in PSI research."
what we infer
The proponents' own team, on the model's own chosen benchmark, under a protocol they froze in advance — the cleanest confirmation that the excess-correlation effect does not replicate on demand. Note the interpretive move that follows in the same abstract: the failure is read as "likely part of the systematic nature of such effects," which is the falsifiability crux (MPI-C010) in action.
limitations
  • Power for the second replication was low (0.69); the first was adequately powered.
  • Standard power analysis is itself contested under a model that denies stable effects — the authors provide theirs only post hoc.

Grote 2021: full blind analysis of 200 participants finds nothing

what the source states
An independent conceptual replication built from scratch tested 200 participants under a blind-analysis protocol in which the complete analysis software was written and tested before the data were analyzed; the unblinding was performed live at the 2019 Parapsychological Association convention. "The main result was found to be not statistically significant and fell well within the expected random distribution of possible results." Two secondary/post-hoc analyses each yielded p = 0.06.
what we infer
The methodologically strictest test in the corpus, by an experimenter independent of Lucadou's group, on the model's nominated paradigm: null. Under the conventional account this is the expected result; under MPI it is absorbed as decline — which is why this record weighs more against MPI-C007 than any single positive weighs for it.
limitations
  • The two p = 0.06 secondary results are reported by the author as suggestive anecdota, not confirmations.

The NT axiom and the decline derivation, in the theorists' own words

what the source states
"Entanglement correlations cannot be used for transmitting signals or controllable causal influences." From this the paper derives: an apparent causal effect "will be wiped out, if one tries to corroborate it by improving statistics through attempts at replicating the effect. This is the well known and often experienced decline effect. The decline effect will be faster, if the original effect was stronger: the reciprocity of effect strength and reproducibility is a further prediction of Generalized Quantum Theory." Correlations "may even change sign or disappear altogether, or else show up again in different observables and/or between different parts of the system."
what we infer
Establishes that the decline/displacement predictions are genuinely in print (2007) rather than retrofitted to the 2017–2021 failures. Note the strength–reproducibility reciprocity: a distinctive, testable piece of fine structure that no replication has yet targeted with a prespecified metric.
limitations
  • A theory paper: this record evidences what the model predicts, not that the predictions are true.

strongest undermining

The best conventional explanation

steelmanned — the account the featured hypothesis must beat

No anomalous correlation exists. The psychological variables in matrix experiments are highly intercorrelated, so counting "significant cells" against an independence assumption overstates the evidence — Monte Carlo and permutation reanalyses shrink the founding results. Early positives are what analytic flexibility, optional stopping, and publication selection produce from null data; decline is regression to the mean; displacement is multiplicity — with enough cells, something is always significant somewhere. Each of these mechanisms is documented inside this very corpus: a coding error behind one celebrated micro-PK effect, a post-hoc contrast rescuing a null study, significance that "broke down in reasonably improved methods of analysis" by the replicators' own account. The strongest-designed test — a fully blind analysis of 200 participants — found nothing, exactly as this explanation predicts. Its residue: a few preregistered replications still reported structured excess correlations, and their authors were not naive statisticians.

What would change our mind

The case does not end in a verdict; it ends in the studies that would move it, in the order this edition judges they would move it most. A result in either direction counts.

Adversarial blind-analysis matrix replication with binding fine-structure predictions

A Grote-style blind-analysis replication (complete analysis software frozen and tested before unblinding) designed jointly by MPI proponents and critics, with two additions: dependence-aware statistics agreed in advance, and quantitative decline/displacement predictions — where the effect should reappear, and how fast it should fade — endorsed by proponents as binding on the model. Either outcome is informative: success under blinding would be extraordinary; failure of the fine-structure predictions strips MPI of its distinctive content.

expected information gain

The single most decisive project available: it converts the falsifiability crux from philosophy into an experiment.

Dependence-aware reanalysis of the founding matrix datasets

Obtain (or reconstruct from published tables) the 1986–2006 Lucadou datasets and the 2015–2020 Walach-group data, and re-run the excess-correlation analyses under permutation and Monte Carlo methods that respect the intercorrelation of psychological variables — the critique reported from inside the program (Flores) but never published as a standalone, reviewed reanalysis of the founding results. Desk work, decisive for the program's origin story in either direction.

expected information gain

Highest information per unit cost in the case: either restores the founding anomaly under sound statistics or reduces it to artifact.

True-RNG versus pseudo-RNG factorial matrix experiment

The 2023 online replication reported the effect with an atmospheric-noise source but not a deterministic pseudo-RNG — the split quantum-flavored theories require, at uneven power. Run the comparison as a preregistered factorial design with equal power per arm: same participants, interleaved sources, blind analysis. MPI-family theories predict source-dependence; every conventional account predicts none.

expected information gain

One of the few places where MPI and the null hypothesis disagree about a forward-looking, easily measured contrast rather than about the past.

Elicit and publish binding disconfirmation criteria from MPI's proponents

A structured elicitation exercise (adversarial-collaboration format, published protocol): ask the model's living proponents to specify, in advance, experimental outcomes they would accept as evidence against MPI — and publish either the criteria or the documented inability to produce them. The 2021 "Nailing Jelly" discussion concedes the paradigm is not replicable while retaining the model; this project forces the question of what, concretely, remains at stake.

expected information gain

Settles the falsifiability claim about scientific practice directly, whichever way it comes out — and any criteria produced become the protocol for MPI-R001.

Powered replication of the documentation-effect field test

Watt & Tierney's 2013 waiting-list design on spontaneous RSPK-type cases was the right test at hopeless power (14 completed cases). Rerun it with the recruitment lessons they documented — multi-year horizon, clinical referral partnerships, preregistered analysis — to test MPI's distinctive field prediction that detailed documentation suppresses reported phenomena relative to undocumented controls.

expected information gain

Tests the model outside the laboratory paradigm it was accused of retrofitting; a well-powered null would close the field-evidence escape route, and a positive would be the strangest result in this file.
