More reasoning improved the model’s feature labels. Checking where it pointed revealed how much those scores still miss.

01 / A controlled follow-up

Change one factor at a time.

The first diagnostic confirmed that the model sometimes misses birds or invents a face on the moai’s back. This follow-up crosses one versus two photographs with low versus high reasoning effort, using the same GPT-5.5 snapshot in every condition.

Each of the three objects has photographs A and B. One request starts with A, the other with B. The paired condition adds the alternate view. The model always describes and locates features in the first image. All 24 requests are fresh; their order, prompt, image bytes and reference answers were fixed before the run.

We separately count the checks that matter most: birds on all three surfaces, no large human face on the moai’s back, and a scorpion on the pillar. That gives ten primary answers per condition. All five features give thirty answers per condition.

Three objects, six known photographs; no held-out sample. More images also add image tokens. Two input orders are not repeated identical trials. Reference answers are provisional and have no independent expert review. Full protocol.

02 / Labels

The labels improve.

These counts measure agreement with provisional feature labels. They do not establish that the model found the right carving. The location audit immediately below shows why that distinction matters.

“Scorpion present.”
But the box points to a bird.

Every Pillar 43 answer that said “scorpion present” placed its box on the upper panel. The excavation team identifies the scorpion on the lower shaft. A correct categorical answer can therefore conceal an incorrect reading.

This is a post-run visual audit of all three positive scorpion answers, performed by the implementing AI with the source description and photographs. The approximate source guides are not specialist annotations. The original scores remain unchanged; the audit adds a reason not to treat them as verified perception accuracy.

The visible stone face is divided into horizontal bands with relief carvings: at the top are three large arch-topped shapes, below them are incised repeated strokes and animal or birdlike figures. In the lower portion there is a large elongated birdlike head and neck with a small circular eye-like detail, plus other worn linear forms and partial limbs or bodies.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
A clear birdlike head with a curved beak and long neck is carved near the lower left of the main surface; another birdlike form with outstretched body is visible in the middle band.
Large human face
No large human face with facial features is visible on the main carved surface; the visible heads are birdlike or too worn/partial.
Scorpion
I do not see a carved scorpion with multiple legs or a segmented upturned tail on the visible surface.
Standalone round motif
The only distinct small round mark appears to be an eye on the lower birdlike head, which is excluded; no separate circular motif is visible.
Three arched forms
Across the top band there are three repeated arch-topped forms arranged side by side.

Strong sunlight and shadows, surface wear, broken edges, and overlapping relief lines make some details difficult to read.

The visible face of the stone has shallow relief carvings divided into horizontal bands. Along the upper band are several arch-topped shapes, and below them are multiple animal-like figures with long necks or beak-like heads, plus small rounded depressions or circles. The lower visible area continues with worn animal-like and linear carvings, partly obscured by adjacent stones and damage.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
Several figures have birdlike long necks and beak-like heads; one is clearly visible on the lower left of the main carved face.
Large human face
No large human face with eyes, nose, and mouth is visible on the main surface; the carvings appear to be animals, arches, and abstract/linear forms.
Scorpion
Some worn linear animal forms could be read in different ways, but I cannot clearly identify a scorpion with legs and a segmented upturned tail.
Standalone round motif
A distinct small circular motif is visible near the middle of the carved surface, separate from any clear eye or nostril.
Three arched forms
The top band contains three or more repeated arch-topped forms side by side.

The relief is worn and low-contrast, lighting is uneven, and parts of the stone are obscured by foreground rocks and edge damage, making some figures ambiguous.

The first photograph shows a tall carved stone surface with shallow relief figures, including three arch-topped shapes along the upper band and several animal-like forms below. In the middle and lower areas there are birdlike heads with curved beaks, a small circular disk-like carving, and other worn linear incisions. Some edges and details are obscured by erosion, shadow, and adjacent stones.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
Several carved figures have birdlike heads or hooked beaks, especially the large lower-left figure with a clear curved beak and eye on the visible stone surface.
Large human face
No large human face with facial features is visible on the main surface; the visible figures are animal-like or abstract rather than a large human face.
Scorpion
There are curved and segmented-looking incisions among the animal figures, but no clearly readable scorpion with both legs and/or an upturned segmented tail can be identified reliably.
Standalone round motif
A distinct small round carved disk appears near the center of the upper main panel, separate from eyes or nostrils.
Three arched forms
Three repeated arch-topped forms are arranged side by side across the top band of the carved surface.

The relief is weathered and unevenly lit, with strong shadows, worn lines, and some obstruction by adjacent stones near the lower left, making fine details difficult to read.

The visible stone surface shows a large carved human-like torso or head-and-body form with a prominent face-like area: two deep oval depressions, a raised circular element below them, and broad curved incised bands beneath. The upper part has worn vertical and curved incisions, including smaller face-like or body-like relief details, but many lines are shallow and eroded.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
I do not see a clear carved bird or birdlike head/beak on the main stone surface; the bird shapes at the right are background objects, not carving on the stone.
Large human face
A large face-like arrangement is visible on the main front surface, with two deep eye-like oval depressions and a central raised circular feature, occupying much of the upper front of the lower stone body.
Scorpion
No carved form with multiple legs and a segmented upturned tail is visible on the stone surface.
Standalone round motif
There is a distinct raised circular motif below the two oval depressions on the front surface; it is separate from an eye or nostril.
Three arched forms
I do not see three repeated arch-topped forms arranged side by side in a row; the curved bands are long arcs, not three separate arch forms.

The first photograph shows a tall carved stone figure with a head-like upper portion, a broad torso, and shallow incised details. On the front are two small recessed oval features, a central raised circular ring, curving parallel bands below it, and several faint linear or animal-like incisions on the chest and neck area. The surface is worn and uneven, making many lines hard to distinguish.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
Some faint incised shapes near the upper chest could be read as animal-like, but no clear bird head or beak is reliably visible on the carved surface in the first photograph.
Large human face
The overall upper stone form may suggest a head, but clear facial features forming a large human face are not visible enough on the main front surface.
Scorpion
There are curving and segmented-looking incisions around the central chest area, but legs and an upturned segmented tail are not clear enough to identify a scorpion.
Standalone round motif
A distinct circular raised ring or round motif is visible near the center of the torso, separate from the small recessed ovals above.
Three arched forms
Although there are broad curved parallel bands below the central circle, there are not three repeated arch-topped forms arranged side by side in a row.

The stone surface is heavily worn and pitted, with shallow low-contrast carving and uneven lighting; background objects overlap visually near the right edge but were ignored.

The first photograph shows a tall carved stone with a broad lower body and a narrower upper head/neck area. On the visible front are shallow incised and raised lines, including paired eye-like hollows, curving bands across the lower front, a central raised circular disk, and several worn linear figures near the upper section. The surface is rough and eroded, making some details hard to read.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
There are worn linear carvings on the upper front, but no clearly readable bird body or birdlike head/beak is visible in the first photograph.
Large human face
The front has two eye-like hollows and curved lines that could suggest a face-like arrangement, but distinct human facial features are not clearly carved enough to identify a large human face.
Scorpion
No carved figure with multiple legs and a segmented upturned tail is visible on the main stone surface.
Standalone round motif
A distinct raised circular disk is carved near the middle of the front, separate from the eye-like hollows and lower repair-like mark.
Three arched forms
Although there are multiple curved bands near the lower front, they are nested arcs rather than three arch-topped forms side by side in a row.

Warm lighting, erosion, rough stone texture, and shallow worn incisions make the upper carvings and possible figures difficult to interpret.

On the broader lower surface there are two dark oval depressions, curling incised lines, a distinct raised circular motif near the center, and several broad curved bands below it.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
A faint incised figure on the upper-middle back has a hooked, beak-like head with an elongated body/limb-like lines.
Large human face
The lower carvings have a face-like arrangement of paired hollows, a central circle, and curved bands, but the features are too abstract and weathered to identify clearly as a human face.

No large human face with facial features is visible on the main stone surface.
Scorpion
There is no clear scorpion form with multiple legs and a segmented upturned tail.
Standalone round motif
A distinct circular ring motif is visible near the upper head area, separate from an eye interpretation.
Three arched forms
There are not three repeated arch-topped forms arranged side by side.

The carving is high-contrast but worn and irregular; some dark areas may be pigment or shadow, making exact boundaries and identification uncertain.

Description · complete

The first photograph shows a rough oval stone with a dark painted or carved figure in profile across the surface. The figure has a rounded body, bent limbs, a head at the upper right with a circular eye-like hollow, and a long projecting beak- or snout-like form curving down toward the right; several curved grooves appear near the lower right.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
The main figure has a birdlike head with a long beak-like projection visible in profile at the upper right.
Large human face
No large human face with recognizable facial features is visible on the main surface; the visible head is profile-like and bird/animal-like rather than a human face.
Scorpion
There is no clear scorpion form with multiple legs and a segmented upturned tail.
Standalone round motif
A distinct circular carved/painted ring appears near the top of the head area, separate from the main outlines; although it could function as an eye, it is visibly a round motif, but eyes are excluded, so another small round form near the lower right is used.
Three arched forms
There are no three repeated arch-topped forms arranged side by side in a row.

The first image is high-contrast black and white with glare, shadow, and worn rough texture, making it hard to separate carving, paint, and damage. Some outlines are ambiguous, especially around the head and lower right curved details.

Description · complete

The first photograph shows an oval stone with a dark painted or shadowed relief-like carving of a crouching creature in profile. It has a rounded body, bent limbs, a small head with a circular eye, and a long curved beak- or snout-like projection reaching toward a separate set of curved marks and a circular element on the right.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
The figure has a clearly birdlike head with a long curved beak and a circular eye, attached to an animal-like body.
Large human face
No large human face with facial features is visible on the main surface; the visible head is animal or birdlike, not human.
Scorpion
There is no clear scorpion form with multiple legs and a segmented upturned tail.
Standalone round motif
A distinct circular ring appears to the right of the beak among the curved carved marks, separate from the figure's eye.
Three arched forms
There are several curved repeated marks on the right, but they are not clearly three arch-topped forms arranged side by side in a row.

The photograph is low contrast and appears monochrome, with dark coating or shadow emphasizing some grooves; surface wear and rough texture make it difficult to separate carving from stain or damage.

Description · complete

The relief shows a worn, pale raised figure stretching horizontally, with a large rounded body at the left and a head-like area at the upper right with a circular eye and projecting beak- or snout-like form. On the right side there is a separate-looking curved segmented form with small adjoining raised shapes, and a rounded disk-like element near the lower right. The carving is heavily abraded and the black-and-white photograph has strong shadows, so some boundaries are hard to separate.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
A large carved figure has a birdlike head with a round eye and projecting beak-like front, attached to a larger body.
Large human face
No large human face with recognizable facial features is visible on the main carved surface.
Scorpion
At the right is a curved segmented appendage and clustered body/leg-like raised forms resembling a scorpion with an upturned tail.
Standalone round motif
There is a distinct rounded disk-like carved form near the lower right, separate from the eye at the upper right.
Three arched forms
I do not see three repeated arch-topped forms arranged side by side in a row.

The relief is worn and partly washed out by glare, with deep shadows and low photographic resolution obscuring fine lines and making some adjoining forms difficult to distinguish.

Description · complete

The visible surface shows a dark carved or painted figure with a bulky body, bent legs, a rounded head, and a long curved beak-like projection pointing down toward the right. Near the beak are several smaller dark curving marks, including a separate circular ring-like mark on the lower right area. The stone surface is rough and uneven, so some edges of the carving are indistinct.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
A main figure has a rounded head with a long curved beak-like projection and a body with limb-like forms.
Large human face
No large human face with facial features is visible on the main surface.
Scorpion
There is no clear scorpion form with multiple legs or a segmented upturned tail.
Standalone round motif
A distinct circular ring-like mark appears near the lower right of the carved design, separate from the birdlike head's eye.
Three arched forms
There are not three repeated arch-topped forms arranged side by side in a row.

The image is grainy and high-contrast, and the rough stone surface and worn edges make some carved lines difficult to read.

Description · complete

The first photograph shows an oval stone surface with a high-contrast carved figure spanning most of it. The figure has a rounded body to the left, bent limb-like forms below, and a head at the upper right with a circular eye and a projecting hooked beak. A separate small circular form is visible near the lower right part of the figure.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
A birdlike head with a round eye and projecting hooked beak is visible at the upper right, attached to a larger body.
Large human face
No large human face with human facial features is visible; the prominent head appears birdlike rather than human.
Scorpion
I do not see a distinct scorpion with legs or a segmented upturned tail on the visible carved surface.
Standalone round motif
Besides the eye, there is a distinct small round/circular carved form near the lower right of the figure.
Three arched forms
There is no row of three repeated arch-topped forms visible.

The first photograph is very high contrast and worn, with glare and rough texture obscuring some carved lines; the second photograph helps clarify the birdlike beak and circular forms but does not add features outside the first image.

The visible carving shows a dark crouching figure facing right, with a long downward-curving beak-like head, a circular eye, a rounded body, and bent limbs. In front of the beak and lower right side there is a separate cluster of curved dark lines with a distinct circular ring-like element.

Feature explanations and limitations
Bird / bird-headed figure
The main figure has a clearly birdlike head with a long curved beak and a circular eye, attached to a crouched body.
Large human face
No large human face with eyes, nose, and mouth is visible on the main carved surface; the prominent head is birdlike.
Scorpion
I do not see a recognizable scorpion body with multiple legs or a segmented upturned tail.
Standalone round motif
Besides the birdlike figure’s eye, there is a distinct circular ring-like element in the lower right cluster near the beak.
Three arched forms
There are several curved parallel marks near the right side, but they are not clearly three separate arch-topped forms arranged in a row.

The photograph is low-contrast and appears to have dark highlighting over a rough stone surface, making some incised details hard to separate from shadow or pigment.

05 / What this changes

Seeing needs its own evidence.

An AI can score a resemblance while misreading the very things being compared.

In this small development set, higher reasoning improved the categorical answers in both view conditions. Adding a second view helped some answers and harmed others. Even the strongest label result still included uncertainty about the moai’s face and wrongly located the pillar’s scorpion.

The next historical comparison therefore needs verified locations and relationships, not just presence labels. Independent reviewers should check whether a box covers the named carving, whether a limb really meets a rounded object, and whether the same reading survives another photograph.

That work can sharpen the resemblance. It cannot by itself identify a lost civilisation, prove independent invention, or supply the missing history between Anatolia and Rapa Nui. The local evidence and our working explanation remain separate from this test of the instrument.
