Can the model see
the carvings?

Before asking how alike two things are, check whether the observer can describe each one. A small diagnostic with every answer open to inspection.

A test of the instrument

A small test with a specific purpose.

We showed GPT-5.5 ten unlabelled photographs, one at a time, in two fresh requests per photograph. We asked for a literal description and five visible features: an avian figure, a large human face, a scorpion, a standalone round motif and three arch-topped forms. “Uncertain” was an allowed answer. We did not ask about historical connection.

The images include alternate views of Pillar 43, the moai’s back and the Orongo boulder; a moai front, another Orongo carving, Urfa Man and a geometric stone provide additional checks. Ten photographs represent six objects or rock surfaces, with the moai’s two sides counted as separate views of one object.

The reference answers were assembled by AI from source records and visual inspection. They have not been independently reviewed. This is a diagnostic against provisional references, not expert certification or a representative accuracy benchmark.

The protocol, prompt, image checksums, answers and decision rule were frozen before the requests. Nineteen completed; one connection failure is kept in the record. No failed model answer was retried or replaced.

The recognition screen was not passed.

19 of 20 planned responses completed. 73 of 94 scorable answers matched the provisional references (77.7%, counting missing answers). Among received scorable answers, 73 of 89 matched (82.0%).

4 wrong · 12 uncertain · 5 missing. The missing answers come from a request that failed with a connection error; they are not model perception errors. The received answers also fall below the frozen 90% threshold.

Independent review: not reviewed. Historical ranking: not permitted. This purposive pilot does not estimate the model’s general accuracy or the resemblance’s rarity.

Repeat disagreement: 8 scorable image-feature pairs changed answer between completed repeats. Cross-view consistency: 19/25 available feature comparisons agreed across two photographs in the same repeat. Agreement can still be wrong. Complete machine-readable readout.

The failures matter

A good-looking average can hide the exact mistake we care about.

The new requests do not reliably recover the scene in every photograph. That is the practical result to carry into future similarity tests.

  1. The moai’s back. One completed response missed the bird figures and was uncertain about a large face. The other photograph produced different readings. Inspect the first view and the alternate view.
  2. The pillar’s scorpion. In the first photograph, one response said absent and the other uncertain. The excavation-team description and photograph provide a direct check. Inspect the answers.
  3. The historic boulder. One response missed the bird and called a curled feature a scorpion; the repeat recognised the bird. A question list can also suggest interpretations to a model. Compare both readings.

These examples demonstrate errors and instability. They do not show that every answer is wrong, or that a model can never help. Source work, alternate views and explicit verification remain necessary.

Interpretation

Recognition is necessary. It is only the beginning.

This pilot does not score resemblance. A failure to recognise a bird cannot support either independent invention or a lost common source. A correct identification would not establish those histories either.

The images were chosen because the earlier tests had problems. They are a development set, not a held-out sample. The same model family was involved in the old pilots, and the source-informed annotations here were assembled by AI. A fresh human review remains essential.

Answers are correlated. The five questions share an image; repeated photographs share an object. We report counts and disagreements rather than treating 94 answers as 94 independent archaeological cases.

Uncertainty stays visible. The model was correct on a larger share of answers when it chose present or absent, but excluding its abstentions would conceal its difficulty with the important images. The main readout keeps uncertain and missing answers in view.

The screening rule was an engineering choice. Ninety percent correct and no failed critical moai-back answers would have allowed development of a broader validation set. It would still not have authorised historical ranking. The next stage needs independent review, better local collections, and a held-out benchmark.
