Jiroft region

Jiroft handled forms

A handled chlorite object with human and animal imagery.

Why these examples belong together

One photographed example; archaeological provenance has not been established here.

Handled chlorite object attributed to Jiroft, with a figure and serpents
object · Jiroft region

Jiroft handled object

A real photographed object can still have unresolved archaeological provenance. Its figures and snakes are not automatically a feathered serpent.

Olmec La Venta

La Venta’s figure and serpent

Monument 19, with its figure, serpent and handled object.

Why these examples belong together

One monument represents a wider proposed tradition. Its different features can participate in different comparisons.

A seated figure sits within a serpent and carries a small handled form. The INAH discussion considers a copal bag.

The proposed connection

What makes it a question?

The proposed resemblance combines several features instead of relying on a lone snake or container.

The earlier picture study and atlas preserve this proposed pair. The original external proposer and Jiroft object provenance remain open.

Look closely

What appears to correspond

  • Both selected images combine a human figure with serpentine elements.
Keep in the frame

What differs or remains uncertain

  • Jiroft’s central figure holds flanking animals; La Venta’s seated figure lies within a larger creature.
  • The apparent “bag” is the whole Jiroft object but a small depicted object at La Venta.
Transmission check

Transmission not yet assessed

The comparison is not yet identified or dated well enough to exclude ordinary transmission, later borrowing or an image-selection effect.

What would move this forward

  • Trace the Jiroft object to a museum accession and acquisition history.
  • Compare whole-object function separately from depicted motifs.
